Dive into the world of art and knowledge

You might wonder how to dive in a world, that you didn't know where to find and what it is about. Where is this world that lures somewhere around you, still you're oblivious to it? The key to the answer is actually quite simple and contains only one word: museums - those, which lighten up a grey day and enlighten you likewise. So don't let the cold bad weather ruin your day, like Trump would say: make it great again ;)

In Vilnius there are actually numerous museums and we bet they're all pretty interesting, but we decided to pick the three ones, which are definitely worth visiting.

1. National Museum of Lithuania

Where?

The National Museum of Lithuania is divided into different locations, but the ones, which are really worth visiting are being exhibited in the old and new Arsenal. The Arsenal can be found in the very centre near the Gediminas tower and Cathedral square.

What?

Both parts of the Arsenal (new and old) exhibit different things. While the old Arsenal concentrates mostly on archaeological foundings, that reach back to the 11th century before Christ. People, that are mainly interested in history and older ethnology should  give this one a try - the development of mankind in Lithuania is broadly presented.
The new Arsenal on the other hand focuses on the newer cultural and ethnological topics, as well as on all different folk costums and habbits, which are especionally interesting here in Lithuania, because the are so rich and colorful. Lithuania is known to be the last country in Europe to exercise pagan costums - so the folklore is definitely captivating.

When?

The opening hours to both museums are scheduled each day from 10 a.m. to 18 p.m., except of Monday, when it is closed.

How much?

The entrance fee is 3 EUR for each museum (so 6 euro in total for both) for adults, discounted fee for students is 1,50 EUR for each.

2. Museum of Illusions

Where?

Situated in Vokiečių str. 6, it is located next to the Town hall and can thus easily be reached by bus or on feet.

What?

Like the name indicates is the museum a place for all kind of illusions and tricks. You can stumble through the halls and get to know all the different ways your mind can be played with. It is definitely worth a visit!

When?

The museum is open each day from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

How much?

The entrance fee is 10 EUR. Unfortunately, there are no discounts for students, so if you should go there plan to go quite late and from Tuesday to Friday, because on those four days there will be a Light show, which is included in the price (starts at 7 p.m.).

3. Museum of Occupation and Freedom Fights

Where?

This museum can be found in Auku str., located rather near to Gediminas avenue.

What?

It contains a lot of information about the history of Lithuania, especially about the time of Soviet Occupation. In the basement of the building you can visit a former KGB-prison, in which the Soviet Secret Service held Lithuanian people in custody. In the other two floors the crimes and hostages against the Lithuanian resistors and against the public in general are depicted. The museum is outstandingly interesting and at the same time horrifying and saddening and absolutely recommendable to everyone.

When?

The museum is open from Wednesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

How much?

The entrance fee for adults is 4 EUR, as a student you get a deduction of three euros, so it will cost you only 1 EUR.
